I want to share a special moment with you. This is a picture from the hospital, when my husband and I welcomed our daughter, Ella. It was the best day of our lives.

Sadly, every time I share a photo of my family, some tell me I don’t deserve to serve in the Senate — or even be a father — because I’m gay.

I always knew I wanted to have kids.

But when I was growing up, I didn’t think I could have a family because I was gay.

I never thought I’d be where I am today: married with a beautiful daughter who inspired me to run for office — in the most competitive Senate race in the country, no less — and fight for her future.
